Spencer's Experience
 
FROM THE OLDEST GROCER...

Shopping in India has come a long way. A big part of that journey was the creation of Spencer's, India's oldest retail chain. Having built a reputation over the years as a brand known for quality, Spencer's had just entered into a bold new phase - one that would diversify this established brand position, thanks to the chain's national expansion from its base in South India. With refreshed store formats and a brave new approach on the horizon, we knew just what they were looking for.

We started by developing a brand strategy that would define the new store formats and clarify for consumers what each stood for. We discovered that Spencer's Express offered an edited assortment and quick shop for the Indian professional, that Spencer's Supermarket delivered greater choice for weekly shoppers with larger baskets, and that Spencer's Hypermarket was a one-stop destination carrying groceries, fashion, electronics, and home goods. We then created a store design that wasn't just distinctive, but bold enough to tackle the challenges faced by a standalone store or one that's part of a complex. A key development was the Spencer's arch, which gave them the high visibility they needed, and we further we reinforced their food-first positioning by introducing a "Taste the World" tagline, supported by the introduction of India's first gourmet and patisserie sections. With clearly defined categories and zones, we created a robust brand image that unmistakably celebrated food.
